How poor circulation affects the skin

poor circulation affects the skin

First of all let me start with a short and simplified explanation about blood circulation….

The blood circulatory system or cardiovascular system delivers nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body. The cardiovascular system consists of the heart and the blood vessels running through the entire body. The arteries carry blood rich with oxygen and nutrients away from the heart and releases it to the cells and rest of the body; blood then takes on carbon dioxide and waste substances. The blood, which is now low in oxygen and high in carbon dioxide and waste substances, is collected in veins and travels back to the heart and the cycle repeats.

Poor circulation is not only detrimental to our health but it also has a very negative impact on our skin.

Poor blood circulation results in:

1. Unflattering skin tone

Usually a person with poor blood circulation will have a pallid complexion; may have a dull skin tone and may even look ashy.

2. Skin discoloration

Poor blood circulation often results in a lack of oxygen in the blood. This can also cause skin pigmentation, dark spots or blotchy complexion.

3. Acne and problematic skin

Over time poor blood circulation affects how your major organs' function and toxins do not get eliminated from your body properly. Poor blood circulation can put strain on your lymphatic system and lump nodes. Toxins build up even more as the lymphatic system and nodes become sluggish. These excessive toxins are excreted through the skin, causing acne or other problematic conditions such as dry skin, itchy skin or even skin rashes.

4. Slower scar healing

Blood transports oxygen and nutrients to cells in the body, these nutrients and oxygen is important for proper cell function. If skin cells do not function properly they can not rejuvinate or replenish as they should the result is usually poor wound healing.

5. Wrinkle formation

Collagen and elastin production is also affected by blood circulation. Poor collagen and elastin production leads to wrinkle formation – thereby causing wrinkle formation.

Just a little side note here:

1 As we age the amount of collagen produced is diminished and the type of collagen changes from a more youthful type of collagen to an older type of collagen. The production of collagen never ends.

2 The Elastin in your skin decreases in content as well as production. But it also does not completely stop being produced.

3 Extended sun exposure reduces collagen and elastin in the skin; for this reason and the reasons above it is very important to wear sunscreen

6. Dark eye circle

Skin around the eyes are thin; poor circulation means less oxygenated blood. Blood that is poor in oxygen has a dark red almost bluish/purple appearance for this reason poor blood circulation tends to give people dark under-eye circles.
